On 9/11, the United States closed its airspace worried about further attacks. That closed airspace meant hundreds of planes and thousands of passengers had to find a new destination. Among them were 38 planes and 6,000 passengers who landed in the small Newfoundland community of Gander. Their story has become one of the happier stories from that dark day. In 1956, the Suez Crisis erupted and threatened to drag humanity into a Third World War that could go nuclear. That crisis was averted through thanks to the hard work of people like Lester B. For almost 50 years, Canada and Denmark were at war over a tiny island in the Arctic. Hans Island was only one kilometre wide, with nothing on it, but it was an important spot along the border when it came to access to surrounding resources. Over the space of eight months in 1942, an 2,700 kilometres of highway was built from Dawson Creek, BC to Alaska. Growing up in the 1980s, Fraggle Rock was one of my favourite shows. It became iconic, and is now remembered with nostalgia by many.
