SpaceX vs. Anthropic: Which AI Giant Is the Better Investment? 02 Nov 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan compare two of the biggest IPO stories of 2026: SpaceX and Anthropic. While both companies have major exposure to artificial intelligence, their business models, financial profiles and risks couldn't be more different. They break down SpaceX's increasingly diversified empire, including Starlink, its reusable rocket and launch business, and xAI. They discuss why Starlink remains an important cash-generating asset, the explosive growth coming from xAI, SpaceX's plans to enter the U.S. cellphone market, and the enormous amount of capital required to expand its AI infrastructure. Then they dig into Anthropic's S-1 and look beyond the eye-popping 1,300% revenue growth. The conversation covers customer concentration, Anthropic's reliance on third-party cloud providers, its heavily usage-based revenue model, improving compute economics and the hundreds of billions of dollars in future infrastructure and lease commitments it has signed. Finally, Simon and Dan unpack Anthropic's complex financing arrangements—including its massive Broadcom agreement—and discuss dilution risk, AI pricing pressure and what investors are really betting on at a potential 1.5–2 trillion valuation. They finish by answering the big question: if they had to invest in only one, would they choose SpaceX or Anthropic? BoC Hikes, Fed Holds, Canadian Mortgage Stress Builds & Google Slumps 31 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Macro Investor, Simon and Dan break down the Bank of Canada’s latest rate hike and the major shift in its inflation outlook. The Bank now expects inflation to remain elevated for longer, has pushed its return to the 2% target out to 2028, and is openly acknowledging that higher rates could put additional pressure on already-weak housing markets in Toronto and Vancouver. They then dig into new CMHC data showing growing stress beneath Canada’s mortgage market. Delinquencies among mortgage investment entities have climbed above 11% in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, while more borrowers are seeing their credit deteriorate and mortgage losses continue to build. They also look at Allied Properties REIT after another massive distribution cut sent the stock plunging roughly 30%, and discuss whether the struggling office REIT ultimately needs to be acquired. Finally, they turn to the AI trade after Google suffered a double-digit post-earnings selloff. Search growth is slowing, AI queries are proving harder to monetize, depreciation is surging and Google expects another significant increase in AI capital expenditures next year. Simon and Dan discuss why the strongest hyperscalers may survive the AI spending boom while heavily leveraged NeoClouds face a much more difficult path as financing dries up. They wrap up with what companies such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Walmart and McDonald’s are telling investors about the increasingly stretched consumer—and why more households are choosing value and eating at home as higher prices and borrowing costs continue to bite. Anthropic IPO Nears, Meta Raises $97.5B & Celestica’s AI Boom Accelerates 29 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan start with the Bank of Canada’s latest 25-basis-point rate hike and discuss why sticky inflation, energy costs and a weaker Canadian dollar could be complicating the outlook for rates. They then turn to the Anthropic S-1, where revenue growth has exploded and compute costs have fallen dramatically relative to sales ahead of what could become one of the largest IPOs ever. They also look at Alimentation Couche-Tard’s latest acquisition ambitions and whether its increasingly aggressive M&A strategy is a sign that organic growth is becoming harder to find. On the earnings side, Meta delivered another strong advertising quarter but is preparing to raise nearly $100 billion as AI spending surges and free cash flow turns negative. Microsoft is offering voluntary exit packages to tens of thousands of employees, while Celestica posted another monster quarter and raised its 2027 growth outlook dramatically. They finish with Coca-Cola and why it appears to be weathering the pressured consumer environment better than Pepsi. NeoClouds & the Debt Problem Behind the AI Boom 26 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan take a deep dive into NeoClouds and the increasingly important role debt plays in the AI infrastructure boom. They explain how companies like CoreWeave finance massive GPU purchases, why its unsecured bonds are now trading at distressed yields, and what the bond market may be signaling about the sustainability of its business model. They also break down the difference between secured and unsecured debt, the risks facing shareholders if CoreWeave is forced to raise more capital, and why even secured GPU-backed financing could become more expensive if AI demand eventually slows. The conversation also looks beyond CoreWeave to the broader NeoCloud sector, including failed and delayed IPOs, growing competition for capital, and the potential ripple effects for hyperscalers, landlords, Nvidia and memory-chip producers if financing conditions continue to deteriorate. Finally, Simon and Dan draw parallels with the dot-com infrastructure boom and explain why investors can be completely right about AI changing the world while still losing money by investing in the wrong companies at the wrong valuations. SpaceX Growth Explodes, Netflix’s Slowdown & BlackRock’s Big Warning 22 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan kick off earnings season with SpaceX, where revenue surged 161% as AI and Starlink growth accelerated. But the enormous growth comes with equally enormous spending, including nearly $10 billion of negative free cash flow and plans for another massive jump in capital expenditures. They also discuss Elon Musk’s comments on a potential SpaceX-Tesla merger. They then turn to Netflix, where revenue growth continues to decelerate and management is providing investors with fewer operating KPIs, before breaking down another strong quarter from BlackRock. Larry Fink also offers a notable warning: for the first time in his 50-year career, he believes the world is facing a shortage of capital as governments and AI infrastructure projects compete for financing. Finally, they look at Intuitive Surgical’s continued growth in robotic surgery and why its massive installed base could become even more valuable with AI, before wrapping up with A&W and the same affordability pressures showing up across the fast-food industry. Where We’re Finding Value in an AI-Obsessed Market — With Braden Dennis 19 Oct 2026

Braden Dennis returns to The Canadian Investor as Simon and Dan look beyond the handful of mega-cap stocks driving much of today’s market and ask a simple question: where can investors still find value? With more than 100 S&P 500 companies sitting in corrections despite strong headline index returns, they discuss how extreme market concentration is creating opportunities away from the obvious AI winners. The conversation covers beaten-down apartment REITs, engineering firms trading at unusually low valuations, utilities, healthcare and several long-term compounders that have fallen out of favour. They also discuss why AI could actually become a tailwind for companies like WSP and Intuitive Surgical rather than a threat, and why investors shouldn't assume every cheap stock is automatically a bargain. Finally, they look at FICO’s massive buybacks, a new wave of private-equity firms buying yesterday’s internet darlings at steep discounts, and the widening generational wealth gap between younger and older households. Is the Economy Starting to Crack? Inflation, Housing & Consumer Stress 17 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Macro Investor, Simon and Dan dig into growing stress beneath the AI infrastructure boom. CoreWeave’s debt is now trading at distressed yields as its borrowing costs surge, raising questions about how long heavily leveraged AI infrastructure companies can continue financing aggressive expansion. They discuss what a slowdown could mean for Nvidia, memory producers and the broader market if the AI spending cycle begins to unwind. Pasted text Pasted text They also look at hotter U.S. inflation, the possibility that central banks keep rates higher, and whether the bond market is beginning to price in weaker growth and demand destruction. Meanwhile, the U.S. housing market has fallen into an unusually deep buyer’s market, even as Berkshire Hathaway continues adding to its position in Lennar. Pasted text Pasted text Finally, they discuss mounting evidence that consumers are trading down as food companies and restaurants struggle to pass along higher costs, what that says about the increasingly K-shaped economy, and why affordability remains the issue households are feeling most directly. ASML Can’t Keep Up With Demand While CoreWeave Starts to Crack 15 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan break down growing stress at CoreWeave as its unsecured bond yields surge to roughly 15%. AI Is Creating Opportunities in Engineering Stocks & Why McDonald’s Is Spending Billions to Reignite Growth 12 Oct 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan look at the sharp selloff in engineering firms like WSP Global, Stantec and AtkinsRéalis. Despite record backlogs, improving margins and solid earnings growth, valuations have collapsed as investors worry AI could disrupt the traditional billable-hour model. They discuss whether those fears are justified—or whether AI could actually become a tailwind by easing labour shortages and improving productivity. They also dig into the challenges facing fast-food restaurants as inflation squeezes both consumers and franchisees. McDonald’s is seeing weak traffic and focusing heavily on value, loyalty programs and restaurant upgrades, while Restaurant Brands International is seeing stronger results at Burger King after years of reinvestment. The discussion looks at why cheap prices alone may no longer be enough—and why grocery stores may be becoming fast food’s biggest competitor. Could U.S. Elections Slow the AI Data Centre Buildout? + Millennial Moron on Housing & Population Growth 10 Oct 2026

In this episode of the Canadian Macro Show, Simon and Dan break down another surge in bond yields and what higher borrowing costs could mean for mortgages, housing, construction and the broader economy. They also discuss the growing political backlash against AI data centres as communities push back over electricity costs, infrastructure demands and new developments. They also look at signs of stress in private credit, including rising redemption requests and investors being offered liquidity at steep discounts to reported NAV. The conversation then turns to affordability and politics, including what recent elections are telling us about how heavily cost of living is weighing on voters. Millennial Moron joins the show to explain Statistics Canada's major population revisions, what actually happened with temporary residents and work permits, and why Canada's recent rental supply boom may be doing more to improve affordability than many people realize. They also discuss zoning, development timelines, NIMBYism and what Canada needs to do to build more housing. Watch the full video on Our New Youtube Channel! Lessons From 4 Market Leaders That Destroyed Their Moats 05 Oct 2026

What causes a dominant company to lose an advantage that once looked almost impossible to disrupt? In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan look at four companies that were once leaders in their industries but made strategic decisions that helped erode their competitive advantages. From AOL failing to adapt to the open internet and BlackBerry reacting too slowly to the smartphone revolution, to Mylan aggressively raising EpiPen prices and Nike pulling back from the wholesale relationships that helped make its brand ubiquitous. They break down the management mistakes behind each decline and, more importantly, the warning signs investors can watch for when a successful company begins taking its moat for granted Stocks discussed: NKE, BB, VTRS Subscribe to our Our New Youtube Channel! The $1 Trillion AI Spending Boom & the Race to Make It Profitable with Braden Dennis 03 Oct 2026

The AI spending boom is reshaping much more than the technology sector. In this episode of the Canadian Macro Show, Simon, Dan and Brayden discuss why massive AI infrastructure spending is increasingly competing for capital, how that could be contributing to higher bond yields and borrowing costs, and why hyperscalers are increasingly turning to debt to fund the buildout. They also look at how dramatically the business models of companies like Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle have changed as capital expenditures surge. They then debate the biggest unanswered question in AI: where do the profits ultimately come from? The conversation covers consumer adoption, AI agents, enterprise use cases, advertising, Chinese competition and whether today's spending can eventually generate adequate returns—or whether parts of the boom are headed for a major reset. Plus, they discuss Canada's potential advantage from abundant energy and natural resources, what rising bond yields could mean for mortgages and housing, and why Oracle may be one of the more vulnerable players if the AI buildout runs into physical or financial constraints. Why Investing Fashion Stocks Is So Hard: 3 Failures & 3 Comebacks 14 Sep 2026

Lululemon was once one of the strongest brands in retail. Now comparable sales are falling, guidance has been cut repeatedly, and investors are asking whether the company can regain its footing—or whether its best days are behind it. In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan dig into why fashion companies can be some of the most difficult businesses to own for the long term. Consumer tastes can change quickly, switching costs are virtually nonexistent, aggressive expansion can backfire, and excessive discounting can train customers to stop paying full price. They look back at Express, Quiksilver and Aeropostale, three once-popular brands whose public shareholders were eventually wiped out, and contrast them with some remarkable comeback stories. Abercrombie & Fitch reinvented its brand, Victoria’s Secret changed course, and Crocs nearly went under before doubling down on the product that made it famous. Finally, Simon and Dan discuss what these examples could teach investors about Lululemon, whether its turnaround could take years, and why waiting for evidence of a recovery may make more sense than trying to perfectly time the bottom. Bond Yields Are Rising Fast — What It Means for Canada, the US and Homeowners 12 Sep 2026

Bond yields are surging in Canada and the United States, and the implications are starting to ripple across the economy. In this episode of the Canadian Macro Show, Simon and Dan break down why the bond market appears to be pushing back against attempts to contain long-term yields, what rising government spending and persistent inflation could mean for interest rates, and why higher borrowing costs could become a major problem for housing, AI investment and economic growth. They also dig into the escalating Canada-US trade war and why Trump may be increasingly motivated to secure a deal with Canada ahead of the midterms. Plus, they discuss Canada's weakening labour market, the growing popularity of variable and shorter-term mortgages, the pressures facing Canadian consumers, and whether government-funded investment is masking underlying weakness in the private-sector economy. Finally, they look at how geopolitics, elevated oil prices, tariffs and fiscal policy are becoming increasingly interconnected with inflation, bond yields and investment markets—and why ignoring macroeconomic developments may be getting much harder for investors. Lululemon’s Brand Crisis Deepens & Trump Targets Canadian Companies 10 Sep 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan break down a rough quarter for Lululemon as falling comparable sales, heavier markdowns and weakening international growth raise serious questions about whether the brand can turn things around. They also look at BRP’s latest results and how tariffs are creating major uncertainty for an otherwise well-run business, before digging into the latest Canada–U.S. trade tensions surrounding Bombardier and Canadian banks. Then, they turn to Couche-Tard, where fuel profits remain strong but merchandise growth continues to struggle as consumers increasingly trade down and look for value. Finally, they check in on GameStop’s ongoing pivot toward collectibles and whether the company is quietly building a more sustainable business despite continued declines in its traditional operations. Data Center Revolt and the Best Ways to Invest in Pharma & Biotech 07 Sep 2026

The AI infrastructure boom is running into a growing obstacle: communities and regulators are pushing back against massive data center projects. Simon and Dan look at why opposition to new data centers is accelerating, particularly around electricity demand, utility costs, water usage and the strain these projects can put on existing infrastructure. They also discuss what delays could mean for the AI buildout, which parts of the ecosystem could benefit from constrained computing capacity, and why Alberta is emerging as an important battleground for new projects. Then, Simon follows up on last week’s Royalty Pharma deep dive by looking at the different ways investors can gain exposure to pharmaceuticals and biotech. From diversified ETFs to established drugmakers, higher-risk biotech companies and the royalty model, they break down the trade-offs between diversification, upside potential and clinical-development risk. They also discuss why seemingly “safe” pharmaceutical giants can still carry significant concentration risk, how AI could reshape drug development, and why healthcare may be one of the more overlooked ways to invest in the AI theme. Stocks/ETFs discussed: RPRX, MRNA, MRK, JNJ, ABBV, LLY, VRTX, REGN, AMGN, GILD, ISRG, SHOP, HUT, SEI, TT, IXJ, ZHU.TO, XPH, IHE, IBB, XBI. Subscribe to our Our New Youtube Channel! The BoC Is Concerned About Inflation & Bond Yields Hit New Multi-Year Highs 05 Sep 2026

Bond yields are climbing, energy prices are surging, and central banks are being forced to navigate an increasingly complicated inflation picture. Simon and Dan break down what the bond market may be signaling and why higher long-term yields matter even if the Bank of Canada keeps its policy rate unchanged. They discuss the potential impact on Canadian housing, rental construction and mortgage financing, along with why inflation-adjusted home prices can continue falling even when nominal prices stabilize. They also look at the sharp increase in diesel prices and refinery margins, what higher transportation costs could eventually mean for consumers, and whether households have enough room left to absorb another round of price increases. The conversation then turns to monetary policy following the latest Bank of Canada decision and Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks, before digging into one of the biggest risks surrounding the AI boom: financing. With hundreds of billions being poured into AI infrastructure, rising borrowing costs and increasingly interconnected financing arrangements could become a major vulnerability. Simon and Dan discuss what happens if AI companies ultimately generate less revenue than expected, whether hyperscalers could be left with excess capacity, and why enormous technological breakthroughs can still coincide with massive capital destruction for investors. Nvidia’s AI Boom Gets Bigger, Canadian Banks Hold Up and Dollar Tree’s Turnaround 03 Sep 2026

Nvidia (NVDA) delivered another massive quarter, with data center revenue surging and management forecasting extraordinary growth ahead. But as the AI buildout gets larger, Nvidia is also becoming increasingly involved in financing, demand guarantees and other arrangements across the AI ecosystem. Simon and Dan break down why that matters, where the risks are building, and what could happen if some of AI’s biggest customers eventually pull back. They also wrap up Canadian bank earnings season with a closer look at CIBC (CM.TO), including rising mortgage delinquencies, commercial credit trends and the growing importance of wealth management and capital markets across the Canadian banks. Salesforce (CRM) delivered a strong quarter as its AI products continue gaining traction, providing another example of why not every software company is being disrupted by AI. Dollar Tree (DLTR) continues its turnaround, expanding its multi-price strategy and improving store operations as more consumers search for value. Simon and Dan compare its progress with Dollarama (DOL.TO) and discuss why Dollar Tree could potentially offer more upside despite Dollarama remaining the stronger operator. Finally, Best Buy (BBY) provides an interesting look at consumer spending, with a notable divergence emerging between its U.S. and Canadian businesses. Subscribe to Our New Youtube Channel! In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, we do a deep dive on two companies we haven’t covered much before: Royalty Pharma and AppLovin. We start with Royalty Pharma, a unique business that finances pharmaceutical and biotech products in exchange for future royalty streams. We break down how the business model works, why it has similarities to precious metals royalty companies like Franco-Nevada, and how investors should think about portfolio receipts, cash flow, milestone payments, drug approval risk, concentration risk and capital allocation. We then turn to AppLovin, one of the most talked-about stocks in the market. We look at how its AI-powered mobile advertising platform works, why the company generates extremely high margins with minimal capital expenditures, and what makes the business so profitable. We also discuss the risks facing AppLovin, including slowing growth, competition from Meta, Apple and Alphabet, concerns raised by short sellers, and why the market is having such a hard time valuing the company after a massive run-up and sharp drawdown. The Canada-U.S. Trade War Fallout with Ben Rabidoux and Ron Butler 29 Aug 2026

In this episode of Canadian Macro, Simon and Dan are joined by Ben Rabidoux and Ron Butler for a wide-ranging discussion on the renewed U.S.-Canada trade tensions and what they could mean for the Canadian economy. They discuss why the trade war could weigh on consumer confidence, business investment, housing activity and key sectors like autos, agriculture, energy and manufacturing. The conversation also covers how political rhetoric, counter-tariffs and uncertainty around future U.S. policy could keep buyers and businesses on the sidelines. Ben breaks down what he is seeing in the Canadian housing market, including why parts of Ontario may be moving closer to a bottom, why housing bottoms tend to be a multi-year process, and how weak consumer confidence, affordability challenges and falling new supply are shaping the outlook. Ron joins the discussion to explain what is happening on the mortgage front, including why more borrowers are moving toward variable rates, how household stress is showing up in refinancing and debt consolidation, and why power-of-sale activity could continue rising into 2027. The episode also covers the K-shaped economy, weakening consumer spending, Canadian bank risks, mortgage fraud, potential U.S. pressure on Canadian financial institutions, and why the next phase of the trade war could have major implications for markets, housing and the broader economy. Canadian Banks Start Strong as Walmart and Intuit Slow Down 27 Aug 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, we break down the latest earnings from major U.S. retailers, Canadian banks, and one beaten-down software company. We start with Walmart and Target, where the results show that the consumer may be starting to feel more pressure. Walmart continues to perform well overall, but its comparable sales growth slowed sharply, and management noted that higher gas prices are changing consumer behaviour. Target showed stronger comparable sales than expected, but both retailers are leaning on price cuts and grocery strength as discretionary spending remains under pressure. We then turn to Canadian bank earnings, including Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank and National Bank. We discuss provisions for credit losses, improving margins, strong capital markets results, wealth management growth, and why the banks continue to deliver despite concerns about the Canadian economy. Finally, we look at Intuit after its latest earnings, including the pressure facing TurboTax and Mailchimp, the continued strength of QuickBooks, and whether AI and pricing pressure are starting to disrupt parts of the business. Trade Deal Hopes, Consumer Weakness, and Bond Market Jitters Send Gold & Bitcoin Higher 22 Aug 2026

In this episode of Canadian Macro, Simon and Dan break down a busy week for inflation, trade, bonds, currencies and commodities. They start with the latest Canadian CPI report, including the renewed pressure from gasoline, food and diesel prices, and why the headline inflation number may not fully capture what households are actually feeling. They also discuss the early details of a potential U.S.-Canada trade deal, including tariffs on autos, steel and aluminum, the push to reopen Canadian markets to U.S. alcohol, and whether Keystone XL could re-enter the conversation. The main focus of the episode is the U.S. bond market. Simon and Dan explain why the U.S. Treasury is increasing buybacks of older Treasury bonds, what that could mean for long-term yields, and why recent moves involving Japan, the yen, and the FIMA repo facility suggest policymakers may be getting more nervous about Treasury market stability. They also discuss why gold and Bitcoin have rallied, what it could say about confidence in government bonds and fiat currencies, and why rising U.S. yields matter directly for Canada, mortgage rates, the loonie and the Bank of Canada. Why Most Retirees Get the 4% Rule Wrong with Mark McGrath, CFP 10 Aug 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon is joined by Mark McGrath, a CFP and advice-only financial planner focused on helping Canadian physicians with comprehensive financial planning. Mark explains how advice-only planning works, how it differs from traditional portfolio management, and why a full financial plan often needs to cover cash flow, taxes, retirement, insurance, estate planning, debt, and investment strategy together rather than in isolation. They also discuss common investing mistakes, including chasing returns, taking advice from the wrong people, overconcentrating in single stocks, relying too heavily on AI tools, and focusing too much on investments while ignoring risk management, insurance and estate planning. In the second half of the episode, Simon and Mark dig into retirement decumulation, annuities, the 4% rule, variable withdrawals, sequence-of-returns risk, and why retirement income planning is highly personal. They also discuss why investors should avoid wasting low tax brackets and how proportional withdrawals across RRSPs, TFSAs and non-registered accounts can be a useful starting point for retirees without a detailed decumulation plan. Bank of Canada Holds, Housing Cracks, and AI’s Infrastructure Problem 18 Jul 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Macro Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan break down the latest Bank of Canada rate decision and monetary policy report. Finally, they dig into the AI investment boom, including new Chinese open-weight models, pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic’s business models, data centre constraints, Tourmaline’s proposed Alberta data centre opportunity, and what semiconductor drawdowns may be signaling for broader markets. The Case for Equal Weight S&P 500 ETFs 13 Jul 2026

In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, we break down Rogers’ move to take full control of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and what it says about the rising value of professional sports franchises. We look at how Rogers’ sports assets compare to the company’s overall market value, why scarce live-sports assets continue to attract premium valuations, and how NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL franchise values have grown over the last decade. We then shift to the S&P 500 and the growing debate around equal-weight versus market-cap-weighted ETFs. With the top holdings now making up a large share of the index, we discuss whether investors are still getting the diversification they expect, why AI-related concentration has become such a major factor, and how equal-weight ETFs can act as a defensive hedge while still keeping broad U.S. market exposure. Do Bonds Still Make Sense? Plus Canada’s New Factor ETFs 06 Jul 2026

In this episode, we take a closer look at bonds and bond ETFs, including where they can fit in a portfolio, why duration matters, and why the traditional 60/40 portfolio may not behave the way many investors expect. We also break down the key differences between owning individual bonds and bond ETFs, using recent examples like long-term U.S. Treasuries versus short-term Treasury bills to show how interest rate risk can impact returns. We then turn to the new Avantis ETFs launched in Canada through CIBC, including why factor-based investing has attracted so much attention, how these funds differ from traditional market-cap-weighted index funds, and why investors should be careful not to treat them as a guaranteed shortcut to market outperformance. The funds may be interesting, but patience, expectations, and understanding the trade-offs still matter. Subscribe to our Our New Youtube Channel!
