Lindsay Clancy's Lawyer Wants the Judge He Just Attacked for Her Retrial
Episodes
Jennifer Sprague told Judge Sullivan that prosecutors will retry Lindsay Clancy. She would not say for what. Reddington asked why the charge is a secret when eleven of twelve jurors said she was too sick to be guilty. In the same November 2nd hearing, Reddington asked Sullivan to keep the case through the retrial — less than an hour after arguing Sullivan got the mistrial wrong. Sullivan turns 70 in June and faces mandatory retirement. Prosecutors filed a motion to gag Reddington from speaking publicly about the case. The holdout juror's attorney warned the court that the defense's campaign against her client sends one message to every potential juror: agree or get investigated. Motta and Dreeke dig into whether the DA is stalling on the charge, what Reddington gains by keeping a judge he attacked, and whether any jury can be picked. Judge William Sullivan had two notes from Lindsay Clancy's foreperson telling him a juror wouldn't follow reasonable doubt instructions. Sullivan questioned each juror at the bench, took the holdout at his word, and sent them back. He never called the foreperson up to ask what she'd seen. The jury hung 11-1 and he declared a mistrial. After the trial, a fellow juror said the holdout had his phone out during deliberations. The holdout's spokesperson confirmed he searched altruistic filicide and psychosis because he'd never heard the terms. Massachusetts doesn't allow phones during deliberations. Reddington wants the phone records and the holdout's sealed jury questionnaire, alleging the man wasn't honest about his criminal history. Sullivan has denied every request. Bob Motta and Robin Dreeke examine what Sullivan could have done and what he didn't. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Three cases, one conversation. Matthew Farwell allegedly demanded Sandra Birchmore re-earn his trust after she told him about his twin brother William. Patrick Clancy's attorney promised a judge in open court that Lindsay would testify she warned her doctors — Lindsay's lawyer denied it. Christa Pike is dictating a statement from a prison infirmary a month after Tennessee tried and failed to carry out her execution. Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke examine Farwell's psychology, the Clancy civil fight, and Tennessee's accountability gap. Prosecutors say Farwell ran Sandra's name through police databases twenty-four times and told her to delete their texts. DNA excluded him as the father of Sandra's baby. Two Clancy lawsuits contradict each other on what Lindsay's providers knew. Tennessee's corrections chief resigned after Pike survived. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Charles Vallow did everything a man is supposed to do when he believes his life is in danger. Part 2 of our docu-series is about why it wasn't enough. It starts in St. George on October 26, 2018, the day Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell met. From there, the testimony builds a world: people rated light or dark, zombies with their spirits pushed out, castings performed on people who never knew they were the target. Lori's friends Melanie Gibb and Zulema Pastenes would describe it under oath. Lori's niece was part of the group. Charles, they said, had become Ned. Tony Brueski follows Charles's warnings in order. The body-camera footage in January. The divorce petition describing Lori as a translated being who cannot taste death. The lawyer who said Charles named Lori and Alex. The beneficiary change to Kay Woodcock. The forged letter traced to Lori's number. The email to Tammy Daybell that never reached her. Then July 11, 2019. A drive-thru at 7:54, flip-flops at Walgreens, a 911 call from Alex Cox, and a husband who lay on the floor for 43 minutes. Alex was never charged before he died that December. Lori was convicted in Arizona in 2025. And then Chad's texts turned to the children. #HiddenKillers #CharlesVallow #LoriVallow #ChadDaybell #LoriVallowDaybell #AlexCox #Ned #TrueCrime #TonyBrueski #DaybellCase Subscribe on Substack: hiddenkillers.substack.com YouTube: youtube.com/@HiddenKillers Instagram: @HiddenKillersPodcast Facebook: facebook.com/HiddenKillersPodcast TikTok: @HiddenKillersPodcast X/Twitter: @HiddenKillersPod This publication contains commentary and opinion based on publicly available information. The man leading the independent review of Christa Pike's failed execution conducted Tennessee's 2022 review — the state didn't follow his recommendations. Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke examine whether hiring the same person again produces anything different. Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada resigned three days after Pike survived. Strada previously oversaw botched executions in Arizona before Governor Lee brought him to Tennessee. Pike is dictating her statement from an infirmary because she can't write. She says the pain from September 30th hasn't stopped. Lee paused executions through the end of his term and leaves office in January. The review has no public deadline. Pike's lawyers argue a second attempt violates the Eighth Amendment. Colleen Slemmer's family still has no resolution. Matthew Farwell's twin brother Billy was rejected by Stoughton police in 2011. The chief wrote down why, and the department hired him in 2017 with that letter still in his file. Matthew had been passed over once himself before Robert Devine, the Explorers mentor who raised both brothers through the program, talked the chief into a second look. Within months of getting his badge, Matthew was teaching Explorers again and sending a Facebook friend request to a fifteen-year-old named Sandra Birchmore. This monologue walks the count from the beginning: a teenage traffic stop in a Crown Victoria that ended with a talking-to, two dropouts made instructors over middle-schoolers, a deputy chief demoted instead of fired after misleading State Police, a call to the station that died at the desk, and two troopers who took no notes. Farwell has pleaded not guilty to killing Sandra. Billy has never been charged. Devine denies every allegation. Patrick Clancy's attorney told a judge Lindsay would testify she warned her doctors. Lindsay's own lawyer says that never happened. Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke examine the collision between two civil lawsuits filed two days apart, against many of the same providers, making arguments that directly contradict each other. Patrick's case needs Lindsay to have warned them. Lindsay's case argues they should have known without the warning. Patrick testified he asked Lindsay whether she needed to be separated from the children. She said no. No provider told Patrick not to leave her alone with the kids. Lindsay's providers allegedly prescribed eight medications in roughly three weeks — including Prozac, Ambien, Klonopin, Seroquel, and Valium. Clinical notes say Lindsay reported fearing "something bad happening." Both suits say the providers never explored what that meant. Matthew Farwell’s lawyers put three experts on the stand November 2nd, and every one came to answer the man who told the jury Sandra Birchmore was strangled. Kentucky’s chief medical examiner said Dr. William Smock isn’t a forensic pathologist, and said no when prosecutors asked whether he’d come to testify about Sandra’s death. A forensic anthropologist from Iowa told the jury a broken hyoid shows up in hangings and in strangulations, then gave them her math on a seated hanging. A forensic science professor from Maine compared the strap’s clasp to the mark on Sandra’s chest and told the jury she’s on the fence. Then the prosecution took the bone expert through her own research and asked her for a single case. Smock testified on October 27th that he’s never seen a fractured hyoid in a seated young person in forty years of looking. Farwell faces life if convicted. The state medical examiner's office changed Sandra Birchmore's cause of death from suicide to "undetermined." Not homicide — undetermined. Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke examine whether that ruling, combined with the DNA exclusion, the absence of struggle evidence, and the federal charge's higher bar, adds up to reasonable doubt. DNA confirmed Farwell is not the father of Sandra's unborn baby. Prosecutors say both Sandra and Farwell believed the baby was his. No DNA was found under her fingernails. Sandra was four foot ten. Farwell was six foot four. The defense attorney opened by calling the relationship an "affair" and putting her arm around Farwell. The federal statute requires proof he killed Sandra to prevent her from disclosing crimes. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Sandra Birchmore told Matthew Farwell she'd been with William, his twin brother. Prosecutors allege Farwell's response was a demand directed at Sandra, not a confrontation with William. Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke unpack what that direction of anger reveals about Farwell's mind. Prosecutors say Farwell allegedly ordered Sandra to delete their texts, told her to pretend he was her older brother, and ran her name through law enforcement databases twenty-four times. William testified they never discussed Sandra while she was alive. When a friend called Stoughton PD and named Farwell on January 20, 2021, trial testimony says he raged at the dispatcher. Sandra once texted Farwell: "Thanks for making me feel like everyone else has. I wish I was never born." Farwell faces federal murder charges and has pleaded not guilty. Jennifer Coffindaffer flew to Tucson in late October and spent a week investigating the Nancy Guthrie case on the ground. She walked Nancy's street after midnight and says she could see twenty yards with her headlights off. She looked at the porch and says evidence the suspect left was never collected. She tore apart the sheriff's claim about a Florida lab trip. She sat at El Charro — Nancy's favorite restaurant — and asked about two dozen strangers what happened. Not one thinks Nancy is alive. She drove toward Nogales. She collected theories from the richest part of the neighborhood, and one of them she held back. This is the complete four-part conversation with Tony and Robin Dreeke. The Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell case is usually told from the end backward. This docu-series tells it from the beginning, and Part 1 is the beginning. Lori Vallow was a former pageant contestant from California with four marriages behind her by 2006. Her third husband, Joseph Ryan, fought her for custody of their daughter in an Austin family court. In 2007, her brother Alex Cox ambushed Ryan in a parking lot with a stun gun and later pleaded guilty. Eleven years later, Ryan was found dead in Phoenix. The death was ruled natural. In a recording made later that year, Lori told friends she had once intended to kill a man. Chad Daybell was a Utah gravedigger who became a cemetery sexton, then a publisher, then the author of a shelf of end-times novels. His wife Tammy ran Spring Creek Book Company beside him for years and later became a school librarian in Sugar City, Idaho, raising ducks, chickens and rabbits on their property in Salem. Tony Brueski traces both lives to the morning of October 26, 2018, when both of them, each still married, set out for the same conference in St. George, Utah. It's the essential background to everything that follows. #TrueCrimeToday #LoriVallow #ChadDaybell #LoriVallowDaybell #TammyDaybell #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #DaybellCase #CrimeDocumentary Subscribe on Substack: hiddenkillers.substack.com YouTube: youtube.com/@HiddenKillers Instagram: @HiddenKillersPodcast Facebook: facebook.com/HiddenKillersPodcast TikTok: @HiddenKillersPodcast X/Twitter: @HiddenKillersPod This publication contains commentary and opinion based on publicly available information. Jennifer Coffindaffer flew to Tucson, spent a week in Nancy Guthrie's neighborhood, and came back with theories from the people who live there. The one that shocked her came from the money end of the Foothills. She says zero evidence backs it. She also says there's a second theory she saved for another show. One couple told her they were certain they knew what happened. Another source blamed someone from years ago. Coffindaffer drove toward the border and checked the routes herself. She joins Tony and Robin Dreeke to sort every theory the neighborhood handed her. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Lindsay Clancy told her husband in December 2022 that she was having thoughts of harming their children. Her psychiatrist, who saw her fourteen times by video, testified that Lindsay denied having thoughts of harming anyone — including the day before her children were killed. Now the civil case may come down to which conversation the law listens to.Patrick Clancy filed a wrongful-death suit in January 2026 against the psychiatrist and nurse practitioner who treated Lindsay, alleging they loaded her with eight medications in three weeks without monitoring the results. The providers are fighting to have the case thrown out under a Massachusetts statute that shields mental health professionals unless their patient made an explicit threat to kill or inflict serious injury. Patrick’s attorney claims the law doesn’t even apply. Lindsay’s attorney says she never warned her providers at all.Her criminal case is back in court November 2nd. Jennifer Coffindaffer flew to Tucson and spent an evening at El Charro, Nancy Guthrie's favorite restaurant and the oldest family-owned Mexican restaurant in America. She asked the whole room — servers, diners, hostesses — what they think happened. Not one person believes Nancy is alive. A man leaned back and said no comment three times while his wife told Coffindaffer the sheriff messed this up from the beginning. Ten women from Minnesota wanted to talk about Jacob Wetterling — a masked stranger, nearly twenty-seven years before a confession. The two hostesses had never heard of Nancy. The staff said the dead season filled with people driving in because of the case. Coffindaffer lays it out with Tony and Robin Dreeke. The defense’s forensic psychiatrist reviewed Sandra Birchmore’s records and built a case that Sandra’s history pointed toward suicide. Dr. Melissa Piasecki never met Sandra, flew in from Nevada for one day, and the judge kept the jury past the usual cutoff so she could finish and go home. She pointed to Sandra’s 2017 journal, her childhood losses, and her medication. The prosecutor asked what she knew about the last day of Sandra’s life. She knew Sandra had been home on her computer. She didn’t know about the work shift, the hair appointment, the pregnancy announcement, the photo shoot, or the gender reveal. The therapist who wrote the note Piasecki read from had already told the jury something different about what Sandra was afraid of. Farwell faces mandatory life if convicted. Jennifer Coffindaffer spent a week in Tucson investigating the Nancy Guthrie case. She stood in front of Nancy's house and looked at the porch where deputies found Nancy's blood next to a clump of vine the suspect had torn off the house. Coffindaffer says that clump was never collected. The mat the suspect stood on was never bagged. The only glove they found, two miles away, belonged to a restaurant worker with no connection to the case. Then she heard the sheriff tell a radio host he'd flown a team to his Florida lab — the same lab the FBI had already pulled evidence out of in April. The hair came back with no DNA. The only sample left is a mix of up to four people. She suspects the trip was about a 1975 cold case the department solved in May, not Nancy. Coffindaffer joins Tony and Robin Dreeke. Jennifer Coffindaffer flew to Tucson and walked Nancy Guthrie's street after midnight with her car lights off. The AP had called this neighborhood mostly dark at night. A former FBI supervisor said neighbor cameras would be close to useless. That became the reason no getaway vehicle has ever been shown. Coffindaffer says she could see twenty yards — porch lights, up-lights on the cactus, the front door — and her camera was the only thing that couldn't see. She drove every road out and passed lit intersections, a school, a church, businesses on every corner. The one car anyone's ever shown is a Ring camera clip from two and a half miles away at 2:36 that morning, still unidentified. The no-parking signs from February's streamer circus are still up. A neighbor told her people don't feel safe. Coffindaffer joins Tony and Robin Dreeke. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In testimony at the Chad Daybell trial, Melani Pawlowski described meeting Chad in November 2018. He was presented as someone who could identify light and darkness in people. Brandon told jurors Melani began attending religious gatherings without him and said he was not welcome. Melani testified she eventually began referring to Lori and Chad as Mom and Dad. It is one thing to follow an aunt's advice. It is another when that aunt and her new husband become the people defining what reality looks like. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke help Tony Brueski examine the influence, the changing boundaries, and how a familiar family relationship can make extraordinary claims feel trustworthy. That is behavioral analysis, not a diagnosis or proof of criminal involvement. Melani has denied involvement in the shooting at her former husband, Brandon, and has not been charged in that shooting. Meanwhile Lori's own Idaho murder convictions are now before the state Supreme Court. Her appeal argues that the trial judge improperly removed Mark Means, the lawyer she wanted, after a conflict involving Means's earlier work for Chad Daybell. The state argues the removal was proper. Former prosecutor and defense attorney Eric Faddis joins Robin Dreeke to explain why attorney choice matters, why conflicts matter too, and what a court must decide before any retrial could occur. Oral arguments are scheduled for November 2, 2026. There is no appellate ruling yet. Brandon Boudreaux testified that Melani looked to her aunt Lori Vallow as a mother figure. That matters because this story starts long before a court argument about an attorney. Melani had lost her mother as a child, and Lori occupied an enormous place in the family. When beliefs around Lori began changing, Melani's marriage and her sense of who to trust changed with them. The contrast is striking: inside the family, the problem was who was allowed to define truth. Inside the courtroom, the problem is who was allowed to act as counsel. The guests examine both without pretending the behavioral history decides a constitutional appeal. Matthew Farwell allegedly asked a close friend to help raise his children in a note dated June 24, 2024. According to prosecutors, he also asked that his wife not be forgotten and said he would see his friend “on the other side.” That was the day news reports detailed a forensic pathologist's conclusion that Sandra Birchmore died by homicide. The note later became an argument over whether Farwell should remain in federal custody before trial. Prosecutors presented the note as evidence that the new publicity changed Farwell's thinking. They acknowledged that he did not flee in 2024, a limitation that matters when interpreting the note. It is not an admission of killing Birchmore. A juror still has to assess the medical evidence, forensic testimony, and credibility of the witnesses alongside his words. The prosecution also called William Farwell, Matthew's twin, who testified under immunity that Matthew had said he wiped phone data following Birchmore's death. The defense challenged the government's interpretation of the larger case and maintains that Birchmore died by suicide. Matthew has pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to her death and that of her unborn child. The government rested its case on October 28, 2026, after 38 witnesses. That turns attention to what the defense can establish and how the jury evaluates disputed evidence. If convicted, the former Stoughton police officer could face life in federal prison. The question of protective housing for a former police officer arises only if a prison sentence follows; it is not a prediction of his fate. Former prosecutor and defense attorney Eric Faddis joins retired FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke and Tony Brueski to discuss what a note like this can show, how prosecutors use post-event conduct, and how corrections officials might assess the safety of a convicted former officer. Melani Boudreaux was trying to remake her life when she moved near her aunt Lori Vallow in Rexburg, Idaho, in November 2019. Within days of meeting Ian Pawlowski, she married him in Las Vegas. Her uncle Alex Cox reportedly stood as a witness. At that point JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan had vanished, and the people closest to Lori were giving very different accounts of what they believed and feared. Ian later testified that Lori and Chad Daybell held an extraordinary position of trust in Melani’s world. According to a written account attributed to him, she expressed fears tied to claims that Brandon Boudreaux and the missing children could be viewed as possessed or dangerous. Those statements are important because they show what was being reported inside the family, but they do not establish that Melani participated in a crime. Her ex-husband Brandon alleged she had information about the October 2019 attack on him and about JJ and Tylee. When Lori was arrested in February 2020, Melani was simultaneously battling for custody of their four children in Arizona. Through her attorneys, she challenged Brandon’s claims and said she did not know where the missing children were. She has never been charged in the shooting. Later, Melani testified for the state at Chad Daybell’s trial. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke join Tony Brueski to look at the long path between the whirlwind wedding and the custody courtroom: relationships, influence, fear, and what it takes to disentangle one’s own decisions from a powerful family narrative. Sandra Birchmore’s death was called a suicide before the medical examiner had a full picture of what investigators would eventually find. At Matthew Farwell’s federal trial, Dr. María del Mar Capó-Martínez testified that her office was not summoned to the apartment and that police reports presented suicide and no foul play as the working explanation. She performed the February 5, 2021 autopsy and initially classified Sandra’s manner of death as suicide. On April 30, 2026, the office revised the manner to undetermined and shortened the cause from asphyxia by hanging to asphyxia. Prosecutors argue the original determination was undermined by missing context. Farwell’s defense challenges the revision and continues to argue that Sandra took her own life. Then William Farwell, Matthew’s twin and another former Stoughton officer, took the stand under immunity. William acknowledged an intimate relationship with Sandra while he was on police duty, dating their relationship to 2018. Jurors were also shown a message about Sandra being 15 when her involvement with Matthew began. William further described a conversation in which Matthew said he had wiped phone information. His account is testimony, not a separate conviction or a verdict against Matthew. Matthew Farwell has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges alleging that he killed Sandra and her unborn child. Tony Brueski is joined by defense attorney Bob Motta, former FBI special agent Robin Dreeke, and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott. Together they examine the gap between what the first officers told the examiner, what William said on the witness stand, and what jurors must still decide without confusing suspicion with proof. Lindsay Clancy's case has moved from an eleven-to-one mistrial into a fight about the one juror who would not vote to acquit. Kevin Reddington asked the court to examine the holdout juror's questionnaire, review phone records, and investigate whether he obeyed the court's instructions. The judge has now rejected the requested post-trial investigation. That juror, Michael Desronvil, has been publicly identified and has retained counsel. His past legal and financial matters have drawn attention, including a dismissed domestic violence charge and a restraining order reported to have been in effect during the trial. Those details raise questions about jury selection, but they do not prove that he violated a judge's order or concealed information. The foreperson claimed Desronvil expressed doubt and still held out for conviction. Desronvil has said he had no doubts at all. Judge William Sullivan declined to remove him while the jury was deliberating. After the panel deadlocked, Sullivan declared a mistrial on September 4. He later ruled, on October 21, that the information discovered after the trial could not be used to attack his earlier mistrial decision, denying the defense bid for an evidentiary hearing. The next fight is about double jeopardy. Clancy's lawyers argue the judge should have done more before declaring a mistrial and say another trial would be unconstitutional. The November 2 hearing addresses that dismissal motion and other outstanding questions. Prosecutors have not announced a retrial decision. Clancy has pleaded not guilty, and the original trial centered on whether postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible for the deaths of her children. The legal stakes now reach beyond one verdict: the protection owed to jurors who disagree. Anna Kepner’s death aboard the Carnival Horizon led to a federal murder prosecution against her teenage stepbrother, Timothy Hudson. Now the lawyers representing him say there is one pending issue they must resolve before advising him on whether to plead guilty or take his case to trial. They have not publicly identified the issue. Hudson was 16 when Anna, 18, died during the family cruise in November 2025. He is being tried as an adult and has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Anna’s body was found beneath a bed in the cabin she had shared with Hudson and another teenager. The federal indictment sets out the government’s accusations; it is not a verdict. The trial had already moved from September to November. In October, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom approved another continuance, setting January 25, 2027, for jury selection and trial proceedings. The court made January 15 the deadline for any guilty plea. Prosecutors did not oppose the latest postponement. The defense previously described a difficult family dynamic that complicated its investigation and access to certain family members. Those problems matter because juvenile sentencing calls for a different analysis than an ordinary adult murder case. Hudson could face life if convicted, but reporting about a possible 24-to-30-year resolution has not established that a binding offer exists. Bob Motta and Robin Dreeke join me for the practical questions behind these filings. What is a defense team weighing when the difference between a negotiated term and a potential life sentence is so enormous? And how much can the public responsibly conclude when the very issue holding up a decision has not been disclosed? Sandra Birchmore was introduced to Stoughton police officers through a youth Explorers program. The program was supposed to offer mentorship. Instead, a departmental investigation later found inappropriate relationships involving three officers connected to her, and one of those men is now on trial for her murder. Matthew Farwell is accused in federal court of killing Sandra and her unborn child in February 2021 and staging her death to resemble suicide. He has pleaded not guilty; his lawyers maintain Sandra took her own life. The government alleges Matthew exploited access he gained when Sandra was a teenager. The department’s internal inquiry also examined conduct involving his twin William Farwell and former deputy chief Robert Devine. Now William has given the jury testimony that makes the institutional question impossible to dismiss. On October 26, he acknowledged sexual contact with Sandra while on duty as a Stoughton officer. He testified under federal immunity and said their relationship started in 2018, when Sandra was an adult. His account does not establish that he participated in Matthew’s alleged crime. It does establish what William himself admitted about his conduct in uniform. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta and retired FBI agent Robin Dreeke join me to separate the evidence in Matthew’s murder case from the larger failure-of-oversight questions. How did officers connected with a youth program retain access to Sandra for years? What should investigators and department leadership have recognized sooner? And how will jurors assess the twin brother’s admission without treating family ties as proof of guilt? That distinction is the heart of this combined conversation. In October 2019, someone fired at Brandon Boudreaux outside his home in Gilbert, Arizona. Investigators identified Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother, Alex Cox, as the suspected gunman. A jury convicted Lori in June 2025 of conspiring to kill Brandon, and she received a life sentence in Arizona. But this combined episode turns to someone who was much closer to Brandon: his then-wife, Lori’s niece Melani Pawlowski. Melani has not been charged in the shooting and has denied any involvement. Then there is a custody-case document attributed to Melani’s later husband, Ian Pawlowski. It describes Melani recounting a belief that Brandon was no longer himself and might need to die as part of a religious plan. The filing also says she did not expect anyone to act. Melani’s representatives disputed accusations in the custody proceedings. Ian later testified about the influence Lori and Chad Daybell had over Melani, describing what he came to see as manipulation. At Lori’s trial, prosecutors pointed to Melani’s connections and questions about the timing of communications. An FBI agent testified, according to the episode’s reporting, that Lori’s phone and Melani’s were connected in a 35-minute call around the time of the shooting. The content of that call has not been publicly established. We also examine the address Melani reportedly sought before the attack, the morning park handoff, and phone activity involving Cox. Each detail calls for context; none on its own proves Melani participated in a conspiracy. Retired FBI agent Robin Dreeke and I compare the phone evidence, the custody filing, and the statements given to investigators. The distinction matters: Lori’s conviction is established; Melani’s alleged knowledge and involvement remain disputed. Gilbert police have said their investigation is active, and Melani has not been charged in the attempted killing. What can the available record actually show about what she knew before Brandon was shot at? Sandra Birchmore’s messages about Matthew Farwell entering her apartment have taken on new meaning in his federal murder trial. Eight days before her death, she described him asking for a key and looking inside her closet and bathroom. A friend testified that Birchmore found the behavior strange. Prosecutors argue the visit fits a plan to kill her and make her death look self-inflicted. The defense has offered a different possibility: Farwell may have been checking whether another man was there. That exchange is only one part of the dispute. Independent forensic experts have pointed to Birchmore’s fractured hyoid bone and the position of her body as evidence supporting strangulation rather than hanging. Her glasses were reportedly found on the bed, and the apartment appeared locked. Farwell’s lawyers contest the prosecution’s interpretation of the scene. A forensic scientist testified that Farwell’s DNA was found on the strap prosecutors identify as the ligature. Then we turn to the October 23 courtroom testimony. Birchmore’s therapist, Diala Alkhalil, described a woman who was dealing with anxiety and grief but looking forward to her baby. She told the jury Birchmore did not report suicidal thinking during their sessions. Defense questions focused on earlier troubling messages, her mental health history, and Zoloft, which can carry a warning about suicidal thoughts. One claim from earlier coverage needs the proper correction: DNA identified Jason Pickard, not Farwell, as the biological father of Birchmore’s unborn child. Robin Dreeke joins me to separate the prosecutor’s theory, the defense’s response, and the testimony that jurors actually heard. The closet visit and the neck injury are different categories of evidence, but both now sit at the center of the same contested death. Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Dee Dee Blanchard, and Ken Urker are connected here by two moments when the public record and the story being told did not line up. Years before Dee Dee’s death, a neurologist examining Gypsy documented his belief that Dee Dee had Munchausen by proxy after finding no support for major diagnoses she had reported. Dr. Bernardo Flasterstein later said he did not think he had enough information to contact child protection. Dee Dee stopped seeing him and took Gypsy elsewhere for care. By then, Gypsy had been presented as seriously ill for years. She used a wheelchair and feeding tube, underwent salivary-gland surgery, and benefited from charitable assistance. Dee Dee also said Hurricane Katrina had destroyed earlier medical records, leaving later doctors without the paper trail that could have challenged her account. More than a decade after Dee Dee’s 2015 death, Ken Urker was found dead at his Raceland, Louisiana home on October 1, 2026. Deputies documented drug paraphernalia, a brown powdery substance, two shot glasses, and a holstered handgun. The coroner said no definitive cause of death had been determined and toxicology was still pending. Gypsy told People she believed Ken overdosed and said she did not know whether it was intentional. Weeks later, her updated Kenan’s Law petition said she was “100 percent” certain it was not suicide. Retired FBI agent Robin Dreeke and I examine that shift against what authorities had actually released. The question running through both chapters is painfully familiar: what happens when a strong claim gets ahead of the evidence that is supposed to support it? With the FBI already working the Sandra Birchmore case, police reports say Matthew Farwell's head-on crash broke a utility pole in two. Lori Vallow Daybell's appeal is set for November 2, 2026, at the Idaho Supreme Court. Farwell pleaded not guilty and blamed a deer he said ran under his hood. The doctor behind the May 2021 suicide ruling testified she was never asked if Sandra's death was suspicious. Lori wants the verdicts reversed, saying the judge denied her the lawyer of her choice by removing Mark Means. Prosecutors say a former gang leader stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times in a special federal unit for ex-cops. Ex-prosecutor turned defense lawyer Eric Faddis and Robin Dreeke, retired chief of the FBI's behavioral program, weigh what that means for Farwell if convicted. On November 13, 1974, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. shot six members of his family in their beds at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, with a .35-caliber Marlin rifle. His mother had told the cleaning woman something tragic was coming. His father had been giving him money and cars for years, and Butch had already pulled a loaded shotgun on him once. At trial he told the jury he killed them all in self-defense and that he was God when he held a gun. The jury came back unanimous. From prison he spent forty-five years blaming his dead sister, inventing a wife, and changing the story with every visitor. Then the house lived again. The Lutz family moved three children in thirteen months after the murders. The book said A True Story. Their lawyer said they made it up. A judge called it fiction. George Lutz trademarked the name and sued his own stepson. The children were five, seven, and ten. Two of them eventually spoke about the man who moved them in. Lori Vallow Daybell, convicted of murdering JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, is taking her case to the Idaho Supreme Court. Her main argument hangs on Mark Means, a lawyer she hired herself. The man paying Means was Chad Daybell, who referred to him as "my attorney" during a jail call. The judge held that Means couldn't work for two people accused of the same murders and pulled him off her case. She calls that a violation of her right to a lawyer of her choosing, and she wants a new trial because of it. A new trial would drag JJ, Tylee and Tammy's families back through everything, for a woman Arizona already sentenced to two more life terms. Eric Faddis went from prosecutor to defense attorney, and Robin Dreeke retired from the FBI after running its counterintelligence behavioral program. Both join me on whether her appeal can succeed. Elizabeth Holmes sat across from Nathan Fielder in You Can See Everything, the A24 documentary, and said she’d never told a lie. A jury convicted her of wire fraud. A judge gave her 11 years. Holmes signed power of attorney over to Billy Evans before prison. He took her X account, put her face on Times Square billboards, and let strangers make AI videos of her. She asked him to stop. He didn’t. Evans started a company called Haemanthus. The prototype looks like the Theranos Edison. The company says Holmes isn’t involved. Prosecutors told a judge otherwise. Holmes and Evans pitched A24 together on making a documentary about her life. Holmes told Fielder she was doing it for free. What happened when she stepped out of that meeting to check on her baby is at the center of this episode. At the Matthew Farwell trial, the government rested after arguing the former Stoughton cop killed a pregnant Sandra Birchmore and made it look like suicide. His lawyers say it was suicide, and Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Stoughton's own internal investigation found three of its officers had inappropriate relationships with Sandra, and Farwell was one of them. That's the same county as the Karen Read case, where the lead investigator was fired. If he's convicted, Farwell would walk into federal prison wearing both labels inmates hate most: former cop, and a case prosecutors say began when Sandra was 15. He was 27 then, they say, and teaching the Stoughton police youth program. Eric Faddis is a defense attorney who used to prosecute, and Robin Dreeke ran the FBI's counterintelligence behavioral program before retiring. Farwell’s defense called Sandra Birchmore’s ex-boyfriend to show the jury a page from her journal listing reasons to end her life and reasons not to. At the bottom, William Kilroy says, he wrote something in his own hand. He told the jury Sandra talked about wanting to join her grandmother and later threatened to kill herself and name him in the note. The medical examiner’s office kept a bone from Sandra’s neck in a jar for more than three years but never had the broken necklace that was around her neck when she was found. A relative found it on Sandra’s bedroom floor. Prosecutors pressed Kilroy on cross and asked if Sandra was a fighter, if she was resilient. He said yes to each. Everything Kilroy described happened three to five years before Sandra died, and in all of his testimony, Matthew Farwell’s name never came up. The defense calls its psychiatrist Friday. Within a day of Sandra Birchmore being found, prosecutors in the Matthew Farwell trial say, several people told State Police she couldn't have died by suicide. Her death was still ruled a suicide in May 2021. The DA cited that ruling when he decided against charges. The medical examiner who made it testified for the prosecution that she gets her information from other agencies. She also said she was never asked if the death was suspicious. In Massachusetts, her office and the State Police sit under the same state public safety office, and the State Police crime lab tested Sandra's blood. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers say Sandra took her own life. Eric Faddis prosecuted cases before becoming a defense attorney, and retired agent Robin Dreeke ran the FBI's counterintelligence behavioral program. Both join me to ask who should get the final word on how someone died. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Prosecutors say Matthew Farwell, a former Stoughton police detective, wrote his closest friend a goodbye eleven days before he drove his truck head-on into a utility pole. By their account, he wrote it the day reports surfaced that the Birchmore family's pathologist had deemed Sandra's death a homicide. In it, they say, he told that friend he'd see him "on the other side." The FBI was already on the case when he crashed near his Easton home. Police reports say the pole snapped in two and every airbag went off. The state says he strangled a pregnant Sandra and staged it as a suicide. He's pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor turned defense lawyer Eric Faddis and Robin Dreeke, once the FBI's behavioral chief, are with me. Judging how Farwell acted after Sandra was gone takes no medical training, and that's where we start. Lori Vallow's niece and Matthew Farwell's twin brother were each close enough to see what was happening. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavior chief Robin Dreeke join me for the full panel on Melani Pawlowski. We go from the aunt she called by a mother's name to the recorded calls in Rexburg and the custody fight she waged a week after Lori's arrest. Then Shavaun takes on William Farwell, the Stoughton cop who had his own affair with Sandra Birchmore. When she was pregnant, he texted asking her to hook up, and said if she didn't, he'd go home to his wife. Months after she died, he joked about Matthew wiping his phones. Melani has never been charged in the shooting at Brandon Boudreaux and denies any part in it. Prosecutors say Matthew strangled Sandra and staged a suicide, and he has pleaded not guilty. Christopher Quaratino was seven years old when his stepfather moved him into a house where four children had been shot in their beds thirteen months earlier. Thirty years later, he called George Lutz "a perpetrator and an instigator." George did not return the reporter's calls. The book came out in 1977 with three words on the cover: A True Story. It sold millions. The movie earned eighty million dollars. Their own lawyer said later they had created the story over bottles of wine, and a federal judge in Brooklyn agreed. George trademarked the name Amityville Horror and sued Christopher in a Nevada court in 2003 over it. The stepson he had moved into a murder house, the boy whose childhood went into a book and a movie he profited from, was now the defendant in his trademark case. Christopher and his brother Daniel both said George hit them and dabbled in the occult. Their sister Missy was five. She has never spoken about it. Matthew Farwell's twin, William, was a cop and was seeing Sandra Birchmore himself when she told him she was 15 the first time Matthew slept with her. He did nothing. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins me on why. William testified on October 26th and 27th with immunity, a deal that keeps his words from being used to charge him over being with Sandra on duty. He drove to her apartment drunk less than a month before she died and says he can't remember any of it. After State Police questioned him, he says he felt exposed and vulnerable, and Matthew told him it would be all right. Later he joked with his brother about wiped phones. Prosecutors say Matthew strangled a pregnant Sandra and staged a suicide, and he has pleaded not guilty. Three people entered Gypsy Rose Blanchard's life at different points, and none of them came out whole. Dee Dee Blanchard fabricated her daughter's illness for twenty-three years and was killed in the house charities built for them. Nicholas Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole for a killing Gypsy planned and he carried out. Ken Urker wrote Gypsy a letter in prison after watching her HBO documentary, proposed, left, came back after her release, had a daughter with her, and was found dead on his thirty-fourth birthday. Between them: a doctor who diagnosed the fraud and said nothing, a father who signed off on procedures for a healthy child, and a public that welcomed Gypsy home as a survivor. This three-part series covers the complete arc across three parts — from Chackbay, Louisiana, to a body on a birthday. Melani Boudreaux had a Gilbert detective swear she was a person of interest in the shooting at her husband, and her aunt Lori Vallow had just been arrested over JJ and Tylee. A week later, she walked into a Mesa custody hearing with her new husband, Ian Pawlowski. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavior chief Robin Dreeke join me on what her lawyer told that court about Lori, and how she was back on track for full visitation by January 2021. We get into how Melani faced that Lori and Chad murdered JJ and Tylee. And we ask how Brandon shares four kids with a woman a prosecutor told jurors was in on the plan to kill him. With the jury out on October 28th, the Matthew Farwell trial had two fights over what jurors will hear and decide. Farwell’s lawyers want a former boyfriend of Sandra Birchmore to testify about choking in their relationship, so they can argue the bleeding near her voice box came from choking she agreed to. Prosecutors object, and Judge Denise Casper said nothing so far had opened the door to it. The defense also asked her to acquit on the main charge, which requires proof Farwell killed Sandra to keep her from reaching federal investigators. His lawyers say the only person she threatened to tell was his wife. Prosecutors answered with how Farwell reacted when a friend of Sandra’s called Stoughton police in January 2021, and with her text days later saying he’d done a 180. I break down the ruling, and a Facebook friend request dated fourteen years to the day before the government rested. Melani Boudreaux testified that Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell taught her some people carried "some type of darkness that you couldn't cast out," and that the whole idea was "constantly changing." By November 2019 she was living next door to Lori and newly married. On recorded calls she said, "I just keep moving and I can't find a safe place," and Chad told her even Rexburg would see turmoil. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavior chief Robin Dreeke join me on why it's so hard to walk away when the people warning you of danger are the ones promising safety. We also get into the memo attributed to her new husband, which says she feared JJ and Tylee "needed to die," and the man she had witness her wedding. Lori Vallow's niece, Melani Boudreaux, lost her mother as a child, and the call telling her came from Lori. By the fall of 2018, Lori was inviting Melani to religious firesides, and Brandon Boudreaux testified that when he asked to come, his wife said he wasn't welcome. That November, Melani met Chad Daybell, who she testified "was said to have a gift" to see light and dark in people. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and retired FBI behavior chief Robin Dreeke join me on why the husband is so often the first one shut out. We also get into whether her faith made her easier to reach, and what Chad gave her that made her hand over that much control. "I did." That was William Farwell's answer when a prosecutor at the Sandra Birchmore trial asked if he'd ever been intimate with Sandra while on duty as a Stoughton officer. He testified under immunity, so those words can't be used to prosecute him. His twin, Matthew, has pleaded not guilty to killing Sandra and her unborn child. Investigators say messages put William outside Sandra's building after midnight on January 10, 2021, about three weeks before she died. The medical examiner testified that police paperwork arriving with Sandra's body already said suicide and ruled out foul play. Prosecutors say video shows Timothy Hudson walking across the Carnival Horizon to throw Anna Kepner's phone in a trash can. His plea deadline is January 15, 2027. Bryan Kohberger is serving four life sentences and claims his lawyers coerced his guilty plea. Trial lawyer Bob Motta and ex-FBI agent Robin Dreeke join me on where each case goes next. On the evening of November 13, 1974, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. ran into his regular bar on Merrick Road in Amityville and told the men at the counter that his parents had been shot. By the next afternoon he had given detectives the rifle, the pillowcase, and a confession. He also asked them what he would have to do to collect on his father's life insurance. His lawyer put an insanity defense in front of a jury. DeFeo took the stand and said he killed them all in self-defense, that when he held a gun there was no doubt who he was. The prosecutor asked if it felt good. He said yes. Six life sentences, served back to back. From prison he blamed Dawn, his mother, unnamed friends. He fabricated a marriage. A judge called his sworn testimony false and fabricated. He died in 2021 at sixty-nine, still serving the sentences. The parole board turned him down every time. Had the Anna Kepner case stayed in juvenile court, her stepbrother Timothy Hudson would have been released by 21 with no criminal record. Instead, he's in federal court as an adult, charged with first-degree murder. Anna was 18 when she died in November 2025 during a family cruise on the Carnival Horizon, and he was 16. He's pleaded not guilty, and a conviction at trial means life. The judge has set January 15, 2027, as Hudson's hard deadline for a plea. If he doesn't enter one, his trial starts January 25. Hudson's legal team says it can't advise him either way while one issue is pending. Prosecutors point to surveillance footage and DNA evidence, which the defense calls circumstantial. Reports suggest he could get 24 to 30 years through a plea deal. Retired FBI agent Robin Dreeke and defense attorney Bob Motta sit down with me to get into how a teenager weighs a deal like that against life. In March 2026, Gypsy Rose Blanchard appeared in a TikTok joking about murder. In August, leaked prison recordings surfaced — calls from 2020 and 2021 where she told a friend she hoped Ken Urker would overdose. Ken was publicly humiliated. He started sleeping with a gun. By September, the relationship had ended. On October 1, 2026 — his thirty-fourth birthday — Ken Urker was found dead with drug paraphernalia at the scene. A cause of death is pending. Thirteen days later, Gypsy was on Instagram. Before the recordings, the media tour had already established the brand: Good Morning America, CNN, The View, a Lifetime deal, a memoir, the Kardashians, and a podcast appearance where she said she doesn't associate herself as a murderer. Part three of the series covers the release, the brand, and the man who died in the wake of it. Bryan Kohberger initialed nine pages of plea paperwork when he pleaded guilty to the University of Idaho murders in July 2025. One question on the plea form asked whether he'd been coerced, and he checked "no." A year later, his petition accused his own defense team of coercing him and claimed he's innocent. Judge Steven Hippler cleared the whole schedule on October 14, 2026, and no hearing is on the calendar. Before the plea, lead attorney Anne Taylor warned Hippler in a sealed memo that her client couldn't rationally assess the case. She asked for more time, and Hippler denied it. The court has ordered that memo shared with prosecutors. Prosecutors want the petition dismissed outright with no hearing. They call it bare and unsupported, and they say Idaho law doesn't recognize his claim of innocence. I'm joined by Robin Dreeke, former chief of the FBI's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, and trial attorney Bob Motta on whether prosecutors can kill this petition on paper. Matthew Farwell's twin brother William promised Sandra Birchmore in October 2020 that he wouldn't say a word about her and Matthew, and on October 27th he told a federal jury what else he kept to himself. Testifying with immunity, William said he and Matthew talked about Matthew's other affairs but never about Sandra while she was alive. As he tells it, the State Police sergeant on her case said he needed it closed out and would try to leave William out of his report. William said Matthew later told him State Police had copied his phones, and that he'd wiped them first. On cross, Matthew's lawyers got William to say he doesn't recall being inside Sandra's apartment on January 10th, 2021, part of their push to leave jurors unsure whose DNA is on the strap. I go through all of it, plus what the government's doctor found on Sandra's neck. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
